The Usui System of Reiki Healing is a hands-on practice. Reiki is an ancient healing technique that uses the Universal life force energy to balance the subtle energies within our bodies and to heal. Reiki practitioners act as a conduit or channel through which Reiki energy travels. The intended result of receiving Reiki is a balanced physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. Reiki is being used today in clinics and hospitals all over the world to support health, wellness and transition.
During a Reiki session, you will lay fully clothed on a massage table, covered in a blanket if you choose, listening to soothing music. Your Reiki practitioner will lay their hands on your body in a series of hand positions over or on the body to deliver Reiki energy. If the flat table position is uncomfortable, Reiki can be performed while you are reclined, or seated in a chair or on a stool.
Reiki tends to feel warm and profoundly relaxing. You may feel the hands of the Reiki practitioner become hot or tingly. Some people describe a floating sensation and some see colours or shapes during the session. Some people fall asleep while others experience emotional release. There is no expected experience, Reiki energy healing sessions are unique for each individual who receives it. The most common results may include a perceived reduction in stress, increased relaxation and an enhanced sense of balance, centeredness and calm.
Just like meditation, or movement arts, the effects of Reiki energy healing are cumulative. While one session can work wonders, repeated, regular Reiki sessions can invite significant improvement. As an example: if you exercise for an hour, you will receive benefit. Like with exercise, if you're active every day for a month, the results will be much more profound. Reiki works similarly – regular sessions support well-being in every way.
Reiki is a complementary alternative option that works well alone as well as in concert with other traditional modalities. Healing is often the result of gentle shifts in awareness, releasing of emotional patterns, achievements of new understanding, and daily practice. Reiki is complimentary too, not a replacement for modern medical treatments.
Chakra positions in relation to nervous plexi, from a 1927 textbook
In Anatomy of the Spirit (1996), Caroline Myss describes the function of chakras as follows: "Every thought and experience you've ever had in your life gets filtered through these chakra databases. Each event is recorded into your cells...". The chakras are described as being aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. New Agepractices often associate each chakra with a certain colour. In various traditions, chakras are associated with multiple physiological functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element, and other distinguishing characteristics. They are visualised as lotuses or flowers with a different number of petals in every chakra.
The chakras are thought to vitalise the physical body and to be associated with interactions of a physical, emotional and mental nature. They are considered loci of life energy or prana (which New Age belief equates with shakti, qi in Chinese, ki in Japanese, koach-ha-guf in Hebrew, bios in Greek, and aether in both Greek and English), which is thought to flow among them along pathways called nadi. The function of the chakras is to spin and draw in this energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance. (Wikipedia)
Root - Related to feelings of safety, being grounded and our needs for security and survival. When the Root Chakra is out of balance, you may experience a sense of disconnection, or restlessness or perhaps a feeling of anxiousness. The Root Chakra connects us to the earth's energy, located at the base of your spine, associated with the colour red and the earth element.
Sacral - The Sacral Chakra, is in tune with creativity, sensuality and our emotions; foundational to feelings of wellbeing driven by pleasure impacting our enjoyment of life within and without. Having a balanced Sacral Chakra promotes the development of our identity and our flexibility in life, allowing us to "to go with the flow"; its located in the lower belly below the navel, associated with the colour orange and element of water.
Solar Plexus - Our power center, you can think of the expression of "trust your gut" when it comes to the Solar Plexus Chakra. Its associated with the fire element and tied to forming beliefs and opinions, our sense of will, responsibility, self-confidence, independence, and discipline; represented by the colour yellow.
Heart - The Heart Chakra located in our chest, centred between the seven main chakras. Integral in our ability to cultivate a love for self and others, compassion, forgiveness, acceptance, awareness, and relationships. Feelings of jealousy or disconnection from others in one way or another may indicate a blockage in the Heart Chakra. Related to breath, the air element we can feel when we are living from the heart and when we're not. The colours pink and green represent our Heart Chakra.
Throat - Obvious in location, the Throat Chakra is tied to our ability for expression and communication both physically and emotionally. When clear we are better able to connect with our sense of self, and spirit, aiding us in living our truth and purpose. If blocked, you may experience the physical sensation of a lump in your throat, or the need to clear your throat and may you leave you feeling insecure or unable to speak your truth or speaking inappropriately.
Third Eye - The connection to our foresight, intuition, and manifestation. Imagination comes into play when working with the third eye. Its located between the brow and typically represented in a light purplish colour. The third eye is recognized to interact with our nervous system, our ability to have insight, deepened self-awareness, inspire creativity and assist us in our path of spiritual enlightenment. When the third eye is closed or blocked, you may experience trouble visualizing and fulfilling your desires in life, difficulty having perspective, or feel anxious or depressed.
Crown - The Crown Chakra, located at the top of our head, and usually represented by the colours white, or gold. Feelings of being connected to a higher power or greater consciousness may be the result of a balanced Crown Chakra. A more profound sense of inner wisdom and the ability to see what your future holds is available when our Crown Chakra is balanced and clear. You may need to clear the Crown Chakra if you notice "closed minded" thinking or behaviour, feeling disconnected, experiencing insomnia and perhaps even headaches.
